DISORDER

   The Medical Point of View

There is no need to suffer!

William D. Kernodle, M.D.

* Fourth Edition

 There have been a number of books written about panic disorder for the lay person from the psychological point of view. My book is unique in that it is the only one written in the 90's about panic disorder for the lay person from the medical point of view. The fourth edition of  Panic Disorder - the Medical Point of View  is over 200 pages long and contains much medical information about the diagnosis and treatment of panic disorder, including the latest on medications used in the treatment of the disorder. The main change from the third edition is the inclusion of the latest diagnostic criteria for panic disorder (DSM-IV) and shift towards selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as the antidepressant class of choice in the treatment of the disorder. I have specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of panic disorder since 1987. I am also a member of the National Institute of Mental Health Panic Disorder Education Program. My book has been recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health and recommended by the journal of Family Practice and the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, as well as a number of the most prestigious psychiatrists in the country. The leading panic disorder newsletter for patients recently has called it required reading for panic disorder education (recommendations included). I am very interested in patient education about panic disorder, especially from the medical point of view. The simplest way for you to obtain a copy of my book is through my office (where a mode

Some Satisfied Readers

I can't tell you how your book has helped me. I can go into my appointment having "done my homework" and get right to the point with my doctor without wasting time, or asking unnecessary questions as I already have a reference point.

  F.Susan Witt - Bridgewater, NJ

Your book is an excellent reference for patient understanding in regards to the characteristics, familial connection, diagnosis and treatment options for panic disorder. It offered encouragement in the face of general misunderstanding about this disorder, and was extremely helpful in appreciating the successful role of appropriate drug therapies in counteracting the anxiety attacks. I found your stance on drug intervention right in line with my doctor's approach to my case and it furthered my belief that I am receiving the best treatment possible.

  Jean L. Antosh - Brookfield,CT

I want to extend my thanks to you for explaining in clear terms what panic disorder is all about. It has been a liberating experience to view it for the first time from a medical standpoint. Your book has changed my entire perception of the disorder and validated just how difficult it can be for a person with panic disorder to function in society and described perfectly just how bewildering and humiliating the disorder can be. Thank you for taking this heartbreaking disorder seriously and educating the medical community and the world that this is not  a character deficiency but a legitimate and treatable medical condition. I am confident that I will continue to benefit from your insights.

"Panic Disorder - The Medical Point of View,"

  By

  William D. Kernodle, M.D.

  The earlier edition of this essential book was reviewed in issue #43. Dr. Kernodle   has written a most informative book on the medical side of the panic disorder perspective. In this 4th edition, the main change is the inclusion of the latest diagnostic criteria for panic disorder (DSM-IV) and the shift towards selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, as the antidepressant class of choice in the treatment of the disorder. His chapter on benzodiazepine use is invaluable. This book is required reading for panic disorder education. It is accurate, informative and easy to read.
